This book is definitely one for those with a deep interest in the Space Shuttle program. A perfect one-stop place for facts and figures with a little history thrown in. Being an Osprey title, Mark Lardas, does take the story from the starting point of the DoD (Department of Defense), and the only launches with manifest and mission listing are those missions completed for DoD. It also concludes before the completion (or termination) of the space shuttle program so there is some missing history there (through no fault of publisher or author - time moves on).

This book does a nice job describing the people and the political processes involved in getting scientific experiments onto the Apollo missions. It also relays a number of interesting anecdotes from the astronaut training and overall program development. Most of the book's focus however is on the politics. I would have liked more technical depth in the discussion of the experiments and underlying scientific issues.
