Review # 1 was written on 2010-04-03 00:00:00 Jeff Borys The techniques presented here are fairly basic but their real aim is to illustrate the tactical strategy of George Silver ,whose succinct description of the 4 governors and 4 principals are axiomatic parts of the larger martial science . I studied briefly with one of Terry 's students and have since incorporated these aspects into all my further martial studies. Silver aimed to describe the quintessence of what he called the 'True English Fight' based on solid observation of strategic realities of combat . Silver was probably the last of the medieval martial artists and wrote his manuscripts against a backdrop of stylistic change - towards the 'Italianate 'style of rapier work that came to define Renaissance swordsmanship ,a subject he vehemently denounced as a mere plaything . Terry Brown does a good job of presenting this material in a practical way, offering the student a path towards deeper study.Along the way he uses some good anecdotes and historical stories to bring the subject to life. On the whole a great little introduction to this sadly forgotten aspect of our martial heritage .Worth a read for sure. |
