Review # 1 was written on 2008-11-21 00:00:00 Jay Marshall I haven't read the entire book, but I read enough to know that I love it. I'm a huge sucker for landscape painting, and this is a thorough look at the history of the genre, filled with interesting details. Büttner did a great job at keeping my interest and saving the bucket load of info from becoming a tedious read. An art book also wouldn't be worth much if you couldn't see the art you're reading about, and this was filled with big, clear images.

Interesting in the details, he has particularly focus on two era: the Antiquity and the classical period. If the division by chapters is often geographical, the author has also attempted to reveal general keys regarding this practice through the ages and the places. The chapter concerning the United States is particularly fascinating an the iconography has been highly studies.
