An interesting book where you learn many things including this: Horse species (Equus) originated in North America and later spread to Asia and farther; it used to have 27 subfamilies. In Americas horse was completely extinct by the end of the last ice age. So how come that Indians and early American settlers were evidently catching wild horses? The Spanish conquistadors brought horse (Equus caballus) with them, together with cattle, in 1519. Soon, large herds were roaming across large ranches of Mexico and Texas. But medieval ranches were subsistent agriculture enterprises; there was no market for their produce. As a result, both cattle and horse procreation exceeded their keepers' need for beef and transportation. Ranch escapees were the source of reintroduction of horses and introduction of bovines into the American wilderness

Good history monograph on the history of sexuality in California during the age of the forty-niners. Nothing revelatory from a history of sexuality perspective but not poorly done either. Worth skimming/reading if you're interested in the field!
