Back in the day, a woman for president or a woman in a political office was seen as possible. Margaret wasn't able to run for president because she was a woman, but she tried in the 1900s. As for formal education, she wasn't given the same chance as the rest of her colleagues but she showed that she was a determined and hard worker. In 1964, her reasons against her running for president was seen as impossible but she declared her nomination as the strong woman she was. From her family's poor background, she learned that hard work was worth it for her to succeed in life. Her announcement to a major-party ticket was also seen as the first time that a woman announced for candidacy. As a woman in office, she had to work twice as hard than the rest of the congressmen. When the Red Scare was a major topic, she made a speech that was worthy of a president to calm Americans of their fears. Even though she lost the nomination, she continued to serve in her work for Congress for more years. Of course she lost her seat senatorial seat, the reason was because of her age and nothing else. The illustrations used were very colorful and simple for a story that is important. The use of white space was of great use when it came to the content of who Margaret Smith was. The use of timelines was also part of the story since education, voting, health, and otehr factors that made women to become president impossible for the way social ways stood in the United States. I liked how the story was written when it comes to how Smith trying to change the social quos that were placed on women. This book makes the content revelant with the elections coming up, and for students to challenge the idea of having a woman for office. This book could be used for instructional uses in the case of Women's history month, and to see that some have tried to run so the gap of becoming president is lessening throughout the years.

Grades : 5-6 Genre : biography I love how Margaret was from a poor family who came from nothing believed in herself so much that she could become president one day. Its a truly inspiring book for young ladies in the world. The book was kinda boring, but has a good purpose. Shows that women can do just as much as men. Rate 4-5
