This is a fantastic book. If you know my Dad and his approach to Christian education, you can definitely see some of the reasoning and examples in this book. The first thing that I can say is the narrative of the story is so compelling. I knew that it all worked out in the end, but the story of how Valley Christian Schools kepts trying to build their campus and kept running into obstacles(kind of like a "out of the frying pan and into the fire" type thing) was unputdownable. The way that God moved through VCS throughout the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s is truly amazing. Some of the specific stories, such as the purchasing of the property, the building of California's biggest pool, and their baseball field were great! Also, this book, as alluded to earlier, provides some great principles about Christian education. It wasn't until about high school that I started to understand the decisions and choices that my dad has made over the years. Cliff Daugherty's(and the whole VCS) mentality of putting everything through the lense of prayer, the Bible, and Christian philosophy was interesting and refreshing, especially in today's climate. All too often, people see Christian schools as either an inferior school or a stuck up school and this book shows a school that is anything from stuck up or inferior. If every Christian school administrator took these principles to heart, Christian education really would become the envy of the world(one of the reasons that I love Liberty University so much is that they have a very similar set of principles as Valley Christian Schools). My one complaint about the book is that the difference between the narrative portion and the principles portion was abrupt and stark. I would have eased more into the principles and maybe simply only infused the principles throughout, although I do see the reasoning for having a list at the end. But that really is one of the most minor of minor problems, and barely affects my rating on the book or the book's merit. Overall, this is a wonderful, fantastic book that I recommend to Christian school administrators, teachers, students and parents. But I digress. I loved this book. 9.0 out of 10! Way to go Cliff Daugherty!
