This book includes a one page introduction by Henry Louis Gates Jr in which he briefly summarizes his viewpoint on the subject. The book is for kids and attempts to provide an overview of the subject of slavery in the new world. Contains segments on the African origins of slavery, slavery in the colonies (including the Carribbean, South America, and British colonies). On page 39 the author states "black slavery was slow to develop in what was to become the United States…historians have not been able to agree whether they were indentured servants or slaves." The book goes on to cover topics such as the developing slave culture on plantations, slave rebellions, the end of Northern slavery, and the limitations of expansion in Southern States. There are descriptions of the daily life of slaves and the rise of abolitionism, the Underground Railway, John Brown, and of course, the "Civil War". On page 106 we find that although "most Northerners were prepared to fight for maintaining the Union they were not interested in fighting to end slavery" and on page 108 we learn about the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln's proclamation stated that any slave held in states in rebellion against the United States would be "thenceforward, and forever, free." The book includes Timeline, Chapter Notes, Glossary, Index, References, Illustration Credits, black and white drawings, photos, and maps.

Fantastic book about slavery in the United States - from the beginning of the European slave trade shortly after the Columbus journey through the 1865 Constitutional amendment. Full of great information, it greatly details slavery's beginnings and hardships which are so often glossed over in the classroom. The only drawback is much of the pre-War buildup if hastily compiled into the last chapter. 5 stars for most of it but 3 stars for the last chapter -- 4 1/2 stars overall.
