Review # 1 was written on 2016-08-13 00:00:00 Erik Stengler Oh, Edith Wharton, I love you so. These stories are so varied and so fascinating. Some could be written by Roald Dahl, some could be Hawthorne, some could be Agatha Christie. She really was a genius.

Review # 2 was written on 2019-11-06 00:00:00 Frederick Isasi I was not impressed by this collection of short stories by the author. There are, of course, some good moments, with some of the stories being very interesting, but for the most part, I didn't find anything great. There are some short stories about the publishing world that I imagine draw on material from some of her own experiences, with the top one being the one that gives the name to this collection, which speaks of the great popularity of popular science. There are two indispensable "Italian" short stories, some related to marriage and genre relations that though not particularly exciting contain interesting social criticism. Expectedly, there is a ghost story entitled The Lady's Maid's Bell, which is, in my opinion, the highlight of this collection, with the author creating an evocative mystery atmosphere and, as is customary, in the end letting us make our own conclusions. Υπάρχουν, βέβαια, μερικές καλές στιγμές, με κάποια από τα διηγήματά να είναι ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέροντα αλλά στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος δεν έβρισκα κάτι εξαιρετικό. Υπάρχουν μερικά διηγήματα για τον κόσμο των εκδόσεων που φαντάζομαι ότι αντλούν υλικό και από κάποιες δικές της εμπειρίες, με κορυφαίο αυτό που δίνει και το όνομα του σε αυτή τη συλλογή, που μιλάει για την μεγάλη δημοτικότητα της εκλαϊκευμένης επιστήμης. Υπάρχουν δύο απαραίτητα "ιταλικά" διηγήματα, μερικά που έχουν σχέση με το γάμο και τις σχέσεις των δύο φύλων που αν και δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα συναρπαστικά περιέχουν ενδιαφέρουσα κοινωνική κριτική. Αναμενόμενα υπάρχει και μία ιστορία φαντασμάτων με τίτλο The Lady's Maid's Bell, που είναι κατά τη γνώμη μου η κορυφαία στιγμή αυτής της συλλογής, με τη συγγραφέα να δημιουργεί μία υποβλητική ατμόσφαιρα μυστηρίου και, όπως συνηθίζει, στο τέλος να μας αφήνει να βγάλουμε τα δικά μας συμπεράσματα.
