This was a very strange book. It had actually come as a recommendation from one of the Unshelved comics by Bill Barnes and Gene Ambaum. I was curious, so when I found it on Hoopla, I had to give it a go. Honestly, though, I'm not entirely sure what I thought. The story is strange, very noir, but all the characters have colorful costumes or look like mascots. And the setting is a theme park. I felt like there was a lot that the author wasn't telling us, and I can't tell if that was by design or mistake. But, I would have liked to have a little more detail to go off of. Still, it made for a very quick and interesting read, and I really liked the art style. It was sort of "copy-cat" manga, but not quite, which made it fun without feeling forced. There's a second book and I'm curious to see how that plays out, too.

This wasn't supposed to be good! I thought I was just going to read an old Tokyopop manga with a silly title and have a few laughs, but doggone it, this book's pretty darn great. I'll be honest, I am definitely biased in liking this series - it's chock full of references from the early 2000's, so a lot of the humor is going to go over younger readers' heads. But if you're looking to relive that special time where America was finding the right mix of manga and graphic novel storytelling, you can't do much better than Dogby.
