This was a First Reads win for me. I was interested in it because both my husband and I have small businesses. Everyone knows the old saying, "If you don't like the message, don't shoot the messenger." Well, in this case, I didn't care for the messenger, but the message was pretty darn good. [In the beginning I found him to possess qualities I generally stay away from and which make it difficult for me to be open; he seemed like a self-centered, arrogant guy to whom the sale was more important than the people. I do have to say that I was able to be more open to the author as the book progressed and as I developed more of an understanding of him and as he demonstrated that he actually had integrity. I still wouldn't want to hang out with the guy, but I can see why he is good at what he does. Also, I can recognize that my reaction to his personality is exactly that--mine. I bet a lot of people will absolutely love him. But, it doesn't matter either way.:] Anyhoo, the first part of this book is devoted to describing Hayzlett's "Mirror Tests"--yes, there are actually three mirror tests, not just one as might be implied by the title of the book. This section of the book I found to have some good information and questions for exploration, but to be a bit clichéd. Sections two and three of the book were the most valuable for me. Ironically, section two was entitled, "Value" (section three was "Sell It"). I found a lot of practical advice in these sections (particularly in the chapters "Adapt or Die" and "The Power of One"--Parts I and II), and I would recommend these sections to any small business owner. Also, the appendix offers a great list of books that are in the author's Business Library "Must" List. I would add this book to that list.

Wow! Great marketing insights from the World's Top Marketing Guru, Kodak's CMO Jeffrey Hayzlett. He is truly a "dream team" marketing leader. Jeff combines good basic marketing insights from his own personal business experiences, plus awesome advice on how to use today's new Social Media platforms like Facebook, Twitter & Linkedin to launch or expand a business. His real life experiences cover small companies to huge corporations, local & global. The author explains how common sense, understanding customers, and integrated marketing efforts have helped him to be successful in his business endeavors. "The Mirror Test" should be a MUST READ for entrepreneurs, marketers & business students. The book is well organized & very easy to read.
