Not a bad bit of local history. Pros - it is well researched and documented, containing about 300 notes and references to primary sources. It is pretty well written, although there are some errors. The book is short (only 100 or so pages of actual text). Cons - his sources are numerous, but only come from two major locations... 1) claims delivered to the government after the war for property damage and 2) a few diary entries. There are some factual errors, for example in several places he talks about a regiment being led by a general. There is another time where he writes about "Confederate General Dan Sickles"... There are some good pictures of Fairfax county during the war, but they are huge, taking up a complete two page spread. It would make more sense to have smaller pictures with the text on the same page directly relating to the picture.

Charles V Mauro's "The Civil War in Fairfax County: Civilians and Soldiers" provides some historical content regarding the American Civil War in Fairfax County Virginia. It largely consists of small historical stories about individual Fairfax County citizens and their experiences during the period. It is written in a sympathetic and respectful manner. On those rare occasions where the book veers to one side or another, it tends to side with the majority view within the county, who were largely pro-Confederate. On the other hand, it does deal forthrightly with the intimidation, harassment and violence directed at pro-Northern citizens. Many of whom had to flee the county in fear of their lives. An interesting read for those interested in Fairfax County history during the CIvil war.
