Review # 1 was written on 2020-04-09 00:00:00 Max Bohnenkamp Il combattimento tra Kogaiji e Goku prende una brutta piega per il principe, quando il ragazzo decide di togliersi, per proteggere Sanzo e il sutra, il dispositivo di controllo, assumendo così la sua forma demoniaca completa - del ragazzetto sempre affamato non resta nulla, se non una macchina da guerra che vuole solo uccidere. Non solo l'avversario del momento, ma anche i suoi compagni. Sarà proprio Sanzo a riportare la situazione alla normalità: il rapporto tra lui e Goku è oggettivamente uno degli elementi più interessanti del manga. Sanzo ha fatto uscire Goku dalla prigione in cui era rimasto rinchiuso per 500 anni, interrompendo la sua solitudine. Nel bonzo, il ragazzo vede una sorta di figura paterna da proteggere ad ogni costo, la persona che ha portato la luce del sole nella sua vita. A dispetto delle varie minacce di morte, credo che anche Sanzo gli sia sinceramente affezionato, anche se dubito che lo ammetterà mai apertamente. D'altro canto, dopo la bella battuta presa, Kogaiji passa dalla padella alla brace, usato come cavia per certi esperimenti dai soggetti inquietanti che girano per il castello di Hoto, esperimenti mirati a distruggere la sua umanità. Yaone e Dokugaku si ritrovano impotenti e alla disperata ricerca di un modo per salvare il principe e la piccola Lirin. Angst come se non ci fosse un domani, visto anche il finale del volume: nuovi guai in vista per i Saiyuki boys!

Review # 2 was written on 2018-12-18 00:00:00 Herbert Schupp A warning: I am biased. This has been my favourite manga series for over a decade and I'm on my sixth (or so) reread. This is as good as I remember. Minekura has given us distinct characters, and even when the speech balloons aren't tied directly to anyone in the panel, you know exactly who is expressing which thought. The art is amazing, and sometimes I'll just stare at scenes trying to soak more in. And the drama/angst jumps in to contrast the humour so suddenly that I will need to stop reading just to process how much I love the moments/characters/everything. Or the humour bumps aside the drama, which is a delightful way to break the tension. In all, that's basically the theme of the whole story. Nothing matters so much you can't joke about it. Though at the same time, everything absolutely matters. Sweet and sour, baby. My copies of this manga are all beat up, but I know I'll read them again. Everytime, it's a treat.
