Review # 1 was written on 2019-11-19 00:00:00 Darrin Mcelroy As an anthology, I don't really know how this book fits together. It is divided into categories (why, how, and whom do I serve), and each of the categories has a selection of readings. Rarely was I able to discern how the piece came to be placed in the category. Outside of the sacred scriptures or explicitly religious teachings, it was often hard to see why the other excerpts even belonged in the book in the first place. The overall effect was disorienting, and it didn't really help me to understand the concept of service at all. That being said, some of the excerpts were stunning. MLK's sermon the the "drum major instinct," the excerpt from Saint Francis of Assisi's biography, and a few of the short stories made me cry. Ok, fine, weep. I wept. However disoriented I was during the rest of my reading, those moments of lachrymose clarity made it all worthwhile. The epilogue has to do with service learning across religious lines and had a few interesting guidelines that might be applicable to my work as a teacher. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-07-09 00:00:00 Matthew Volzer There were some great selections but some felt like they were stretched too tight to a particular theme and did not seem as relevant. It was cool to read so many stories from different faith traditions, though. |
