Review # 1 was written on 2013-01-05 00:00:00 Stephen Villa If there ever was a subect for niche publishing, this is it. Luckily for me it's exactly my kind of niche! Aside from some sequential meandering and a lengthy chapter on muiscal theory of the songs, this is an assiduously researched saga of this 'play with music', its creation, performances and beyond. The cultural and social trends attendant to the period are analytically sound. For a musical theatre nut/queen, the book is hard to put down. |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-12-28 00:00:00 richard simon A very interesting story that unfortunately kept getting bogged down in a mass of details. Most of the details were necessary ones, of course, but they could have been better organized and presented (and sometimes, I think, better interpreted). On the whole, however, the book did a fairly good job of capturing an event and a period. And it made me dig out my soundtrack of "Star!" (the Gertrude Lawrence biopic) again, so that's all to the good. |
