Review # 1 was written on 2020-07-23 00:00:00 Antonio Hall I probably thought more about Travis's work in grad school than anyone else. He is one of few genuinely systematic contemporary philosophers, and he also has his own distinctive, oddball literary style. He invents memorable and compelling examples. Here's a quick summary (for a paper I'm working on) of what occasion-sensitivity comes to: • English (e.g.) expressions have context-invariant meaning. • Meaning does not determine extension (or the thought or proposition a sentence expresses); it merely "constrains" what an expression can be used to talk about (or whether a sentence is true). • What is said by the use of a sentence (a determinate thought or proposition) or what is referred to by an expression is determined only when a meaningful expression is combined with a correct understanding of the use of an expression on an occasion. • A correct understanding of the meaning of an expression on an occasion of use is that of a "reasonable judge", who is sensitive to a potentially open-ended number of factors. Reasonableness, and hence also correct understanding, is not equivalent by an appreciation of some finite set of contextual parameters.

Review # 2 was written on 2013-12-19 00:00:00 Kevin Moe I found the idea of semantic primes interesting and helpful, and the comparison of words for key ideas like friend or freedom or fatherland in various languages gave me a lot of food for thought. I guess I would need to reread the Japanese chapter, though, it was a lot less clear in my mind.
