This book takes a history of medicine approach to the topic of vitamin D and so is quite different to books on vitamin D written by doctors. It's an interesting read. This book points out that humans are designed to get lots of sun exposure, and that recently many of us are getting very little sun at all. Continual low light exposure isn't good for us. Getting sun is important and not just for vitamin D. Getting sunlight exposure helps us sleep, helps reset our body clocks, is related to healthy metabolism, healthy neurological function, fertility and so much more. The work of Weston A. Price is discussed briefly, and his findings about the importance of vitamin D (and A) on general health and dental health. Some of the information about solar dimming and also about low D levels and poor bone formation and the links with these two things to higher numbers of caesarian sections was especially interesting. The author is clearly passionate about this topic and the text is mostly very engaging and easy to read. The author of this book is not a health expert but a historian. This makes for a lot of interesting facts and information in the book, but it does also mean that while common myths about vitamin D are challenged in the book, the author also upholds many other myths and writes about some high processed food items in a way the best books on diet and nutrition would just never do. This book mentions optimal vitamin D levels on testing only very briefly, and the topic of hiow much vitamin D to take is also dealt with very briefly. This book is about sunlight and our need for it rather than just giving detailed practical supplementation, testing or sun exposure information. To read practical information on what the optimal level of vitamin D on blood test is, and how to get there using sun or supplements or both, you need The vitamin D cure by James Dowd or Vitamin D: The Sunshine Vitamin by Zoltan Rona M.D. or similar. Vitamin D tests costs around $50 and can be bought online, posted to you, and then posted back. It is so easy. Getting up to an optimal vitamin D level is just essential to maintain health, to have healthy babies (the D level should be optimised prior to conception) and to treat any serious disease as well. Vitamin D has so many functions in the body - as do all the major vitamins and minerals, we need them all. Being low in anything important will affect your health negatively. Getting some sun is also a very good idea and so long as you avoid getting burned, or not wearing sunglasses during the brightest parts of the day, can only benefit your health. Any pitcher, anyone teaching a person person to pitch, who is interested in that pitcher being healthy and remaining healthy, must read this book, and must learn the lessons in this book, and use those lessons well.
