The Bay Islands of Honduras is a travel guide to a place I had never heard of. The author gave such a good introduction to these islands that I want to go see them now. This guide book is more than a list of places to stay and to eat. There is a good introduction to the culture, history and geography of the whole country of Honduras. The Bay Islands are on the Atlantic side of Honduras. There are four larger islands and many small cayes. The largest islands are Utila, Roatan and Guanaja. These are popular with scuba divers and according to the book the least expensive diving certifications schools in the world are there. The north side of Honduras has a mixture of peoples including descendants of escaped African slaves who still maintain a unique culture. Columbus landed on the Bay Islands in 1503 on his last voyage. Later English pirates dominated the islands and for awhile English colonists claimed the area. Traces of all these cultures still can be seen. I do think I would like to see this part of Honduras. Maybe someday.

I just read the section titled "Places". I had started with people, but I was bored after the first entry, so I skipped that section. The book reminds me of Weird New Jersey, except not nearly as entertaining. At one point the author alluded that, because such-and-such experience did not happen to them, maybe everyone else isn't telling the truth. I was finished with the section when I read the story about the whale being found and how it led to the discovery that the area was an underwater region-- ohh, but there might be some other craaaaazy sea monster discovery. What? There isn't anything extraordinary about it, the skeleton and region was scientifically explained, so there is no further suspense about a "mysterious creature". Paleontology, bitches!
