This collection of just under 200 pieces, now at the Met, ranges from archaeological artifacts to late-20th-century art, and ranges over much of North America in origin. So there's a lot of selective representation, and a selection principle that seems driven by aesthetics and "importance" (from an outside perspective), which in all feel a bit elitist and overly art-historical. But the photos are great, and the text suitably descriptive, and I rather like the introductory essays -- particularly those by JCH King and Judith Ostrowitz.

I am not a big fan of American history, I was simply reading it for a class. That being said, for a textbook, this book was a quick and easy read.
