Review # 1 was written on 2016-02-02 00:00:00 Laurence Lindeman A very basic reference; more of a vocabulary list or traveler's pocket reference than a true learner's dictionary, as the words are simply translated, without any usage guidance. The Persian section is organized by the anglicized transliteration into roman letters, which is handy for the novice but a bit of a stumbling black when trying to translate from an actual printed Persian document, which uses Arabic script. Travelers considering this title should be warned that for a book published in 2008 there are some major lacunae in the choice of words, even when taking the need for multiple cultural contexts into account: for example, this book contains fascinating terms like "cognomen" and "metempsychosis," while missing more pedestrian words like "computer" and "emergency." I can't speak for the Persian side, but on the English side there are many non-standard translations: for example, the Persian "qaliyan" is listed in English as "Hubble Bubble" (which, for the curious, turns out to be a quaint term for either a "hookah" or a "hubbub"), and "chos" is translated as "silent wind, fizzle" which is … well, a rather puzzling definition to say the least. There are also several misspellings on the English side (e.g. "statue (scalpture [sic])") that undermine one's confidence in the reliability of the dictionary. I expect the strengths of this dictionary lie rather more on the Persian side, but native English speakers certainly could not be blamed for wishing that the dictionary had been more carefully edited and provided more context for its definitions.
