Review # 1 was written on 2013-12-30 00:00:00 Kelly Lam Definitely a teachable and arresting collection of material. Tons of different perspectives, with an emphasis on demonstrating the different ways that CNF writers take on different topics and how/why they make the choices they do. Also much discussion of the questions CNF writers ask themselves and the conversation around those questions. I especially appreciated the conscious effort to include diverse voices from across many spectra, giving the collection a particular sense of scope. Highly recommended. |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-02-27 00:00:00 Jozef M Panek My take on it: This book is organized around standard nonfiction writing themes (e.g., profiles, place, science & nature), Each section repeats the following recipe: example stories falling into two categories: personal essay and literary journalism (hence the "I & Eye" subtitle) The sections wrap up with a smattering of craft essays by authors who are well-known for writing in their corollary subject. Tracy Kidder, Phillip Lopate and Scott Russell Sanders, for example, write the craft essays ending the section labeled "Portraits". It's a great collection. the craft essays are a great writer's resource and the essays are moving my reading in new directions; I'm finding lots of wonderful new-to-me authors here. |
