Review # 1 was written on 2017-03-21 00:00:00 Faustino Lopez This sweet story talks about the relationship between three young sisters, Suzanne, Yasmine, and Sarah, and their grandparents. The girls live near their grandparents in New Jersey, but their grandmother Hekmatt and grandfather Hedaiet were born and raised in Cairo, Egypt. The book is filled with family photographs showing the girls belly dancing, writing in Arabic with their grandparents, baking, and attending a mosque. There are also old family photos showing their family back in Egypt. The back of the book includes the Khattab Family Tree, as well as a glossary, and suggestions for learning more about your own family. This book is geared towards grades 1-6 and would fit well into a unit studying autobiography and family history. Reading this book could be followed up with a family history project, family tree project, or family interview project. A similar book that could be paired with this title is Meet Christopher: An Osage Indian Boy from Oklahoma, which also focuses on telling the story of an average child and their family.

I like the photos and think the information about Egypt, Arabic, and Islam while not necessarily riveting as a story, is important, enjoyable, and informative.
