Despite the stupid name, which I suspect the author was saddled with, this is actually the only how-to-draw-manga book I've ever liked much. Instead of generic Western comic looking figures with added big eyes, like most manga books, it mylooks at different shojou styles. I especially liked the looks at "classic" Rose of Versailles type shojou styles, pop art "retro" styles and the formal, ugly/beautiful "aesthetic" style.

What can I say? I give it a full 3. In my opinion, the quality of the stories was fairly decent overall for this kind of schlock, higher than those in volume 5 anyway. Still, schlocky though it may be, I'm rating "You Toomb" by the same standard I use to rate most books - the degree to which it accomplished its goals, mas o menos points for my own subjective tastes and aversions. It opens with "Chicken Man", yet another obligatory Voodoo yarn, which predictably centers on a fowl-cutting, doll-stabbing, snake-wearing houngan. By the way, if anyone can refer me to a Voodoo yarn that doesn't focus on its darker side (guess it's all pretty "dark" to most white readers), I would be quite impressed indeed! Still, this one has both horror and humor to spare. "Brain Food" is arguably the best written/illustrated story in this volume. It's really quite funny and clever in its narrative device, but I don't want to give away any more than that. "Little Darlin'" is a touching take on vampirism, and "Murder M.A.I.D" features a more macabre version of Rosey (The Jetsons) as its titular character. None of it will be earning any literary accolades any time soon, but all of it is good, nasty fun.
