The Woman Who Married a Bear is a folklore story for ages 7-9 years. This folklore comes from First Nations cultures. The book tells the story of a young woman who hates and insults bears but must come face to face with them and face her consequences. Like most folklore the story can feel a bit strange initially as the plot does include some sort of fantasy element. This story however feels familiar as it is a variation of the story that inspired the Disney movie Brother Bear. Brother Bear was one of my favorite movies growing up so I did enjoy hearing this retelling. This similarity may draw in young readers as well. The illustration is very realistic and makes the story feel more authentic. However , I feel the story lacks a fun element for young readers. Though it is interesting it does feel a bit serious as well and may not be as intriguing for younger kids. The story also teaches a lesson about respect. The young woman did not respect the bears until she was forced into their lifestyle. She was able to overcome differences and change her ideas about bears after experiencing life with them. She was then able to spread her new mindset with her village. Though I feel we didn't get to experience the character's growth as much as we could have. Her change from hate to appreciation seemed to happen too abruptly. I enjoyed the story overall but feel it could've been altered slightly to better appeal to children.

This is a children's book based on Native Alaskan's myth. I enjoy reading anything related to AK. Also wanted to refresh myself on the legend before reading John Straley's book with same title.
