Excellent exploration of rightist or national-revolutionary Zionism and its roots in Jabotinsky's views. The main point is that the book also evokes the totally forgotten figure of Max Nordau (alias Simon Südfeld) who was first attracted by Modern 19th century European thinking but felt that nevertheless Judaism was rejected as alien to the genuine Hellenic roots of European culture and that Enlightenment was a fake ideology which had promised emancipation and given it to the Jews as a mere "logical deduction" and not as a gift that was emotionally justified. Jabotinsky in highly romantic texts wanted to get rid of traditional Judaism as it compelled the Jews to be miserable beggars along the Highway of Civilization and History. Zionism in his eyes was therefore the key attitude for Jews who wanted to walk alongside the other people on this Highway. Problem is that they wanted a land that was described as empty in order to realize this project. Worse they sketched a scheme for a future State that encompassed not only Palestina as the addition of three former Ottoman "vilayets" or as the British mandate after the Treaty of Versailles but as stretching from Egypt till Mesopotamia. Hellenic and enlightened reason faded away to give place to a new Messianic exaggeration.

Herzl wrote an incredibly idealistic pamphlet, complete with comprehensive details of how he imagined the Jewish homeland would work and how the Jews of Europe would get there. It seemed impossible. But then it happened.
