As it says in the intro, "These books are meant for amateurs training their own dogs". He has about twenty drills to teach the dog (and owner) how to retrieve one to three birds or dummies, on land. Other books cover different terrain. Each drill has several components, and he explains how to correct the dog who has a problem with any part. He seems very knowledgeable and writes fairly clearly. I am a newbie with the terminology and I've had to re-read sections just to figure it out. (Who know a forced-retrieve was good?) He wrote several books, and perhaps I should have started with one of those. The photos and drawings are utilitarian, but useful.

A really comprehensive guide to dog-friendly places in California. The only drawback: the listings are by county, so you kind of need to know the state's geography.
