Review # 1 was written on 2020-05-15 00:00:00 Sean Bracken (I read all four volumes but didn't feel like listing this four times.) Bourke was a liberally-educated soldier, and writes well. His detailed record of scouting and fighting on the Great Plains, as well as verbatim reports of negotiations with Indians, are fascinating and vivid. On the other hand, it was all in the service of genocide, a truth he only gradually comes to realize. He never sheds a lot of his bigotry towards other groups, which makes him difficult to read. If you are not too sensitive about this, his diaries really illuminate the history. |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-08-23 00:00:00 Marc Trudel Little essays on America that are almost short poems. |
