Review # 1 was written on 2011-04-11 00:00:00 Rick Callow This is my favorite time in American history; not because of the division of a country, not due to the bloodshed; but, because it is the only portion of American history that proves that extremist can devestate an entire people. I am a firm believer in historical 'eternal return' or 'eternal recurrence' (All of this hs happened before and it will all happen again). Although a religious belief, with te decline of Christianity the belief fell out of use in Western cultures. I have spent a great deal of time in historical libraries and museums; and I have learned that this concept should be once again realized. About the book: This is a fantastic book concerning the Battle of Saylor's Creek, which set up the surrender of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House. Not only does the author grant the reader an accurate portrayal of what occurred at Saylor's Creek, he also uses words of the actual participants of the battle. His research is phenominal; he has located not only the reports written by both the Confederate and Union Generals, but also has located Confederate and Union soldier diaries and letters home which help to give a humanistic reality to his portrayal. This is one of many books I feel that every American should read. Not everyone felt that the occurrances of war was justified and this book offers proof that Americans were still Americans, no matter which government oversaw their actions. |

Real History not really as it is only a tiny slice of one young man's adventure in the reality of war. Thank You Bruce for letting me into your World. |
