Quotable: Who knows the all-pervading power of the press in this country, knows, also, why it is so. Only the daily, trite laudations and the rose-tinted reports will eventually find the same fate as that donkey in the fable, in which a clever person dyed it green and exclaimed that it was naturally a green donkey; so that everyone from near and far ran together to stare with amazement at the marvelous animal. The crafty person earned much money, but only for two days; because already by the third, the people had become used to the green donkey and no one looked at it anymore. Whether the man was as smart as many of our correspondents and dyed that donkey blue to again delight the people, the fable does not say.

I found this a fun & exciting book, but I can't imagine any non-history buff would get past the introduction. The extensive notes in the back are necessary to be able to follow the diary entries and correspondence. Re-enactors will love it, it really puts you in the field with the original writers.
