Review # 1 was written on 2013-09-22 00:00:00 LUC JUBINVILLE This book was highly recommended on several adoption book lists. My opinion is rather mixed. Who should read it - those who want to adopt an older child and want a rather frank awareness of potential challenges they may face. Those who are adopting from the US. Who shouldn't bother to read it - those who have already read a number of older child adoption books. It doesn't present anything new. Those who are adopting internationally; while the book does contain one chapter on international adoption, the rest of the book assumes your child is coming from foster care and that you have pre-placement visits with your child. Overall, I thought the book was rather depressing. For example, on the section on international adoption, the author writes "since part of your child's problem is likely to be RAD..." (131). It is? Really? RAD is that common? My social worker said that parents should be aware that it could be an issue but it's not "likely" to be a problem. In other words, the chances are greater your child WON'T have RAD. I also wish that the author had included some "after" stories of the life lessons. She writes about a real life situation where the child is having issues and how those issues can present themselves in everyday life. Then she leaves the story behind and offers some brief suggestions on how to deal with that particular issue. There is no follow up to the story, no information about what those specific parents did to help their child and whether their child was ever able to move beyond the issues. Inquiring minds want to know. Success stories offer the reader hope. |
