Review # 1 was written on 2019-09-09 00:00:00 Derek Cheung This story showed complex emotions thought the illustrations. The story can help children that have younger siblings to accept them and get along with them. Childern may be frustrated with the things their younger siblings do, but this shows the childern working together at the end and vivid pictures of them coming together to have fun. It was a good read and the illistrations are fantastic. |
Review # 2 was written on 2013-09-12 00:00:00 Andy Kurniawan The story concept is fairly sound: a little brother breaks things, makes messes, and gets stuck, while his big brother always fixes things for him. In the end, though, when a blanket fort is falling down, it's little brother who engineers the solution. That said, I found the language a little too simplistic. While I understand it's intended to mimic the way a baby talks, it just didn't work for me. Without Rama's colored pencil, crayon and watercolor illustrations, the text would fall completely flat. (Compare to I Can Help, which uses simple--not simplistic--text to convey a clear story. While it's greatly enriched by illustrations, the text is not dependent on them.) The illustrations themselves have soft and fuzzy edges, which play well with the overall childlike quality of them. They create a sense of place and the subtle changes to the expression on Sam's face convey his growing frustration. Not a terrible book, and my daughter wanted to read it again immediately--but it's probably not something I would choose again in the future. |
