Another in my continuing effort to provide my husband with books about his favorite childhood hero Astro Boy. Over the last few years I have ordered many titles for him, and since he will be here in April, I recently sent for four more. There are 23 in this particular series, and I think we are pretty close to having most if not all of them by now. Number 8 was the first to arrive. It actually is Part 3 of "Once Upon A Time" Astro Boy Tales, so probably Volume 7 (arriving in a few days) will be Part 2. I think 6 and 9 are already down in Mexico, so I eased up on my usual obsession of reading a series in order. lol The volume explains how it came about that Astro Boy was able to go to school with humans, and also how the law against robot discrimination was enacted. And there was a mold from outer space that wanted only to live on a deserted island once it got to Earth, but of course The Powers That Be wanted to destroy it. Then there was the extraterrestrial grasshopper. That will make Marco laugh, for reasons that are too long to get into here. As usual, Astro Boy provided me with an evening of giggles and admiration for the author. I can see why my husband''s younger self thought Astro Boy was so cool, because he truly was. And he still is!!

In this volume the reprinting of Sankei Newspaper strips is finished (1968-1969), it includes a page recapping developments in previous volumes, this series was reprinted in sequence starting in volume 6 and continued in volume 7. Due to time travel shenanigans this retells the story of Astro leaving the robot circus, gaining parents and going to school. slightly altered by time travel. In particular this story creates a new explanation for the passing of the robot law that gave robots full civil rights. In this series the robot law was initiated by aliens who Astro Boy helped issuing an ultimatum to the people of Earth to free the robots. The story also raps up the saga of Scara Ohara the fickle locust woman who came to Earth to commune with nature. It was only when the story makes it explicit that I realized Scara and some of her paramours have names that refer to Gone with the Wind. The volume finishes with a standard Astro Boy story from Shonen magazine circa 1967 where he has to stop a rogue robot. Even though I found the Sankei strips a bit unoriginal I think this raps them up in a fun way. The story of the faceless robot is fun and poignant. The stories in this volume are: "Once Upon a Time" Astro Boy Tales Part 3 (the text recap of the Sankei newspaper strips so far) Living Mold from Outer Space A Declaration of Robot Rights Astro Goes to Elementary School Gone with the Snow (end of the Sankei newspaper strips) The Faceless Robot
