I am not a religious person by any measures, but the subject of religion always managed to arrest my attention. Most christian books I've read are utter bullshit to me, but Trugman's works are something else. He explains the Jewish take on many aspects of life and actually supports it with solid (albeit unique for Judaism) logic and reason. On second thought, it's not entirely unique for that specific faith. Norse mythology has similar kinds of numerological magic and the tree of Yggdrasil brings the Kabbalistic Tree of Life to mind, with its ten Sephiroth. Christianity often appears to me as a retarded take on the Jewish tradition with a messianic figure thrown in to make it more accessible. The Mystical Meaning of Dreams is the second book I have read by the author. It is packed with interesting facts both scientific as mythic or symbolic. The Jewish tradition is presented as highly symbolic, rather than putting a higher emphasis on the literal (as so many christians usually do). For instance, Trugman elaborates on how Jacob and Esau represent different urges present in all of mankind. Thus, the story becomes profound even in our day, compared to focusing on wether it's literal history or not. That's not what's important in Trugman's books. There are a whole lot of things that just seem like nonsense to me, like the numerology, which gives me this "National Treasure" kind of vibe. That said, i'm convinced that the author knows what he's talking about. I just don't get it. It seems too far-fetched. All in all, putting my personal beliefs aside, i would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in an inside take on the Jewish tradition.

Really liked it, as with all of Rav's Trugman's book. My only niggle is that I would have loved to have read more on the subject - which is a perennial theme in my reviews of the works by this author, as I enjoy his insights, knowledge and writing style tremendously!
