The section called My Brother Running is about his brother who killed himself. The other poems tend to also be stories of place and people. I wish he did more like this one, which was out of his comfort zone. The horror it expresses is done without a lot of bloodshed, but we perhaps feel it even more: Killing the Animals by Wesley McNair The chickens cannot find their heads though they search for them, falling in the grass. And the great bulls remain on their knees, unable to remember how to stand. The goats cannot find their voices. They run quickly on their sides, watching the sky.

"He has a gorgeous ear for the rubbing-together of adjacent words. . .McNair is a New England poet, preserving the speech and character of a region initmately known. Because he is a true poet, his New England is unlimited. Whole lives fill small lines, real to this poet and real to us." - Donald Hall, Harvard Book Review On "The Town of No": "McNair is one of the only handful of younger poets willing to take risks. This is, without a doubt, one of the year's best poetry collections." - ALA Booklist On "My Brother Running": "The story of the speaker and his brother takes on a degree of obsessiveness that is more urgent than anything in McNair's snapshots from rural life, and the poem is without question his best." - David Wojahn, Poetry
