Review # 1 was written on 2014-10-13 00:00:00 Greg Kohler An exciting story in words and many photographs of the construction of the Forth Bridge which opened in 1890. This is the the railway bridge over the River Forth in Scotland, which was the first bridge over this part of the river between South and North Queensferry, and as such, is just called the Forth Bridge. (The second bridge is the Forth Road Bridge opened in 1964, and the third bridge is the Queensferry Crossing opened in 2017.) The book describes what an incredible achievement the design and construction of the first cantilever bridge to made from steel was, and shows how it was done in the numerous fascinating black and white photographs throughout the book. It is amazing to see and well worth reading the book.

Prior to this bridge's erection, the "Firth of Forth" was too wide to cross with a single span, but in 1883, work began on a new type of bridge; the first with a steel superstructure. It is still today considered one of the wonders of the engineering world. This collection of photographs, anecdotes and tales from the builders themselves is unparallelled among such accounts. An essential addition to the shelves of engineering enthusiasts and historians alike, it is also highly valuable to those of us who have ancestors who worked on the bridge between 1883 and its opening in 1890.
