Review # 1 was written on 2020-10-22 00:00:00 Apostolos Voutsas Between three and four stars for me. Three because I borrowed it from the library and didn't find enough of interest to want to buy the book. But some of the tasty recipes I've made from it would earn four stars on their own merits. The sizzling beef and mushrooms over watercress was delicious. Chicken lettuce cups tasted good but were fiddly to eat. The lap chong fried rice has an unusual taste for the eaters at my house -- good enough, but not a make-again recipe. I'm waiting for cool weather to try the short ribs, which sound terrific. Despite all the modern-day complaints about huge servings at restaurants, the serving sizes from this cookbook are on the small side. They'd be better with side dishes or appetizers or something else on the table ... like at a restaurant, not the one-dish-dinner style at my house. I ate at the Hali'imaile General Store once (and would gladly go back), and their servings were far more substantial than what this cookbook recommends.

Review # 2 was written on 2020-02-10 00:00:00 Clarence Crowe A good collection of recipes, all suited to the home cook. Recipes range from safe and comforting to exotic and exciting. I didn't like the photos. There are lots of photographs of the location, of people and produce, but not nearly enough depicting the dishes in the book. The writing is good, the author shares the history of the included recipes. While I like the selection of recipes, I hesitate to recommend buying this book. Look through it first to see if anything jumps out at you. Otherwise, borrow it from the library.
