this is one of the first books in my attempt to get a better understanding of anti-imperialist revolutions around the world, but especially Cuba due its proximity to the US and size. i think Schwab provides an organized and well thought out explanations to the effects of the US embargo relating to social, political, economic, and religious aspects of the Caribbean nation. Schwab makes sure to distinguish the West vs Third World definition of human rights, so as to give more context to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its part in US-Cuba relations throughout the decades. he also argues that the US was not initially set on bringing down Cuba's political frame simply due to anti-communist sentiments but rather the power that rests in Castro's hands - which was interesting imo in context of the progression of the embargo policies. i didn't realize this book was written in 1999 (my mistake) but to think of what has happened in literal 20 years after this time is INSANE... to think that 9/11, the 2008 recession, and FIDEL'S DEATH (RIP) hasn't happened... regardless of some dated commentary, overall i think this is a satisfactory introductory text that explains the historical and political shaping of this tiny communist nation.

Although this book is a bit dated (it was published in 1998), it provides great information on how the embargo affects the Cuban people. More importantly, it distinguishes between two interpretations of human rights: 1) political/civic/individual and 2) social/economic/collective. This, Schwab argues persuassively, underpins some of the tension between Cuba and the US. He also presciently notes what would happen when Raúl Castro came to power. I use this book for the class that I teach and I highly recommend it. Much of what Schwab writes remains very relevant as Donald Trump prepares a new assault on Cuba.
