Review # 1 was written on 2014-09-05 00:00:00 Garland English Spiritual and sentimental, Welch's (no relation) anthology gives fatherhood (and sonhood) fine tribute. Welch writes winsomely, with self-deprecation and unapologetic honesty. As an expecting father, I feel both overwhelmed and empowered by the vocation as Welch describes it. I think I can do this. And I wonder if I can do this. Probably 1/2 the stories come from Welch's experience, the rest from profiles of other fathers and sons he's written over the years as a journalist. Welch weaves with just the right sense for the reader's journey. I also really like the seasonal metaphor, though cliche. From spring through winter and on to new spring, Welch takes us through the strange journey of raising and letting go. |
Review # 2 was written on 2010-07-13 00:00:00 Frank Gavrilos This book stands alone in my personal library. No other book has impacted me more personally outside of the Scriptures. It made me aware of the importance of being a good father, and the importance of family. It may be the only book that I can say really changed me. I first read it several years ago. It may not impact everyone the same, because everyone's background and family history is different, but for me it was life changing. I wrote Bob Welch a letter thanking him for writing it, and received a long, very kind response. It's a must read for dads. |
