Dog Donovan is on my favorites shelf because my heart draws to stories with dogs in them, but it also has a very important hidden message to get children and people over fear they struggle with in day to day life. This is an absolutely adorable story about a family who is afraid of everything and they get a dog to help them. To their surprise, Donovan, the dog they bought was also afraid of everything. The family had no choice but to help Donovan get over his fears, and in doing so they were able to get over their own fears. In the reading classroom, teachers can use this book to help students understand what fear is and how different situations can help you over come fear.

This is a perfect book to read with kids who have specific fears. Here, the seven members of the Donovan family each have something in particular that triggers panic -- spiders, the dark, strange noises ... They agreed that perhaps a dog could protect them from these fears. However, the dog inadvertently helps them face, and conquer, their fears.
