Review # 1 was written on 2010-12-07 00:00:00 Cleaton Duguid This is the second book in a series (first book: First Apple) about Yeung Ying, a young girl in rural China in the late 1940's. The details of her daily life fascinated me. I really can't imagine myself eating fish heads and fish guts, but to each his own. I especially enjoyed this one because Ying's family and friends misunderstand her motives for doing the strange but kind deed toward the end of the book. Even though everyone around her thought she did something crazy or stupid, because she felt good inside doing it, she knew she had done the right thing. Rather than explain herself, she remains silent. Very nice. Can't wait to read the third book now! |
Review # 2 was written on 2011-01-08 00:00:00 Jesus Mendoza About a young Chinese girl set in the 1940s, describing the customs and superstitions. She worked to earn money for a school camp and then gave it to a dead class mates grandmother for a chicken. It was her way of showing the grandmother her sorrow over the grand daughters death. ages 9-12 |
