Review # 2 was written on 2012-02-07 00:00:00 Terry Clifton This story is most interesting for two reasons. One, it is written in Bengali and English. Each page contains the story told in both languages. Second, it is based on a play by one of India's most famous writers and educators and Nobel Prize-winner Rabindrath Tagore. As I mentioned in an earlier booktalk, this would be a great connection to the book Homeless Bird, which so often mentions the poems of Tagore. Even though a picture book, this story would then be more suitable to older students studying Indian culture, literature, or history. For younger students, the story may be a bit hard to comprehend fully, but students would still get a lot out of seeing such a different alphabet. Also, it could be a good introduction to life in an Indian village and different professions of the people there. Students may also be able to connect to the character of Amal, who is confined due to his illness, and how his creativity and curiosity help him deal with his illness. Not my favorite story, but an interesting read nonetheless! |
