Im writing this review as the author graciously obliged my request to let me have the ebook. I imagine I now hold the distinction of being the only orthodox Muslim in the world to have read Rosie. I signed up for it being entirely unaware that this is an LGBT novel! I have mixed feelings about Rosie. On the one hand, it is written by veteran social scientists. The novel is rich with research findings from various social science disciplines e.g. Duchenne smiles, pheromones and sexual attraction. Especially abundant in the narrative is the social history and anthropology of Hawaii, where the novel is primarily set. As befitting social scientists, the phraseology of the authors is also economical and transparent. On the other hand, the lead author, Dr. Elaine Hatfield, is also a die-hard democrat. Shes now in her 80s, and perhaps there are some vestiges from the 1960s era. The core narrative features a Human Sexuality instructor at the University of Hawaii, Dr. Rosie St. Giles. Her research advocates the legalization of same-sex marriages. A supporting narrative is a burlesque of a Republican politician. The novel, unfortunately, is also profuse with obscenities and mockery of convention and social mores. What Rosie can be credited with is for being a blend of informative and current, while being quite undemanding of the reader. At one point, I did find myself sufficiently engaged to look up the Dr. Hatfields professional history. I suspect that some of the struggles that the protagonist goes through with the academic establishment are inspired from events in the formers own storied career. This is not a novel that I can recommend indiscriminately. The reader must have the maturity to be patient with authors (very) liberal persuasions. I advise skipping over the supporting narrative (of Senator Milton Kuszek and Sun-shine) entirely. With those disclaimers, I can give it three stars. It does have some currency and so has earned a place in my library. And I will recommend it, only to veteran readers with a discerning eye, in the following events: * As a preliminary text on Hawaii before deciding to undertake another book that demands much more commitment e.g. James Micheners Hawaii. * As a heads-up to anyone fellow orthodox Muslims whore about to visit Hawaii for a vacation altogether. * As a resource to anybody whos considering a career as a social scientist in US academia. Thank you to the author.
