Review # 1 was written on 2020-10-06 00:00:00 Aron Das Rating - 7.5 On one hand, it is refreshing to read a supportive, positive view of Hoover; however, on the other hand, Wannall goes too far in painting a perfect picture & does not acknowledge any of the wrongdoings A bit surprised that it glosses over the JFK assassination but the content on MLK is fascinating & conversation-worthy; Near the end, the thoughts/counterpoints are repetitive from the earlier chapters Interesting Thoughts FBI was granted permission to break the restrictions of investigations pertaining to domestic security by FDR with investigation of the Nazi movement in 1934 In the summer of 1948, the US Government uncovered a number of high-ranking US government officials who were Communist spies (Alger Hiss et al) Senator Church seemed to be on a witch hunt when doing the hearings on the FBI and Hoover. It was not apparent at the time that Church was going to announce for Democratic Leadership According to Wannall, Hoover was against the topic of wiretapping but with the rise of the US Communist Party (and revealing that Government officials were involved) Bill Sullivan - number three person in the FBI became so obsessed with replacing Hoover that he became the most out-spoken critic of Hoover. There were four main programs in COINTELPRO that used very intrusive information collection techniques: Socialist Worker�s Party, Ku Klux Klan, Black Nationalist Party and the New Left (COINTELPRO was disbanded in 1971 after 285 approved actions) King was wiretapped in the hotel rooms as w his always being on the road, it would not make sense to rely solely on work or home. JFK approved the MLK wiretapping MLK had Communist influences on his staff & was part of the reason that it was signed off on (MLK was aware and did not act upon it. Kennedy initiated the idea of a wiretap. King had many adulterous affairs & a number of sexual perversions. He also was justifiably accused of plagiarism in college Huston Plan - a staff assistant who was a presidential advisor on security - called together all the heads of security and wanted to expand control of electronic surveillance, allow surreptitious mail & entry, expand undercover agents and penetrate colleges more The Huston Plan was approved and then revoked five days later Dr Kissinger had an active and authoritative role in the Wiretapping for Nixon (impetus was to find news leaks in the administration) Pentagon Papers - leaked from Jacob Ellsberg to the NY Times that had the entire Vietnam War Foreign Policy in it. Broke into a psychiatrist�s office of s suspect to collect evidence JFK shared a woman with Sam Giancarlo who was head of the mob family - also allegations that the Mafia helped JFK win West Virginia Rebuffs Summer�s allegations on everything & calls him a sensationalist author that had either unscrupulous or little sourcing. There is no verification of the homosexual arrest or the cross-dressing allegations Bobby Kennedy and JFK (many president�s were not a fan of Hoover). Likely many President;s tried to get rid of Hoover but either were fearful of his popularity or of the information he held (there is dispute as to what his Official & Confidential files held) Hoover brought down many organized criminals in the 1930�s and had collected information in the 1950�s. Ultimately though the couple of examples to refute the Mafia allegations are not enough to withdraw suspicion
