This resource devotes a chapter to the origin of many traditional folktales including Cinderella, The Frog King, Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Rupunzel, Rumplestiltskin, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow White. Included in each chapter are the variations of the story in the past, as well as variations of the story published today. This resource is useful in explaining the origin of folktales and theories of how folktales have spread. I focused on the chapter on Cinderella stories because I will be teaching a unit on Cinderella stories from around the world. It was interesting to learn that Cinderella started as a folktale and there is no way to tell how old the original story is but, the oldest datable version was found in a Chinese book written around 850-860 CE (Vos, 33). It was also interesting to learn that, There is a general consensus in the folktale literature that Cinderella is the most widely known folktale of all (Vos, 33) and more than 700 variations are known throughout the world. The story is thought to have developed in the East and then spread throughout Europe.

An overview of popular fairy tales, listing of motifs, and summaries of fairy tale retellings and studies in great depth. Great for finding new books to read!
