Review # 1 was written on 2015-10-26 00:00:00 Robb Salovich A decent overview with insightful commentary about the evolving relationship between the (elite) Chinese community and the government of the day, with occasional assessments of the changing role of race as envisioned by the state. There is much more to be said about the latter, and it is a pity that the book did not explore the evolving role of race as an end in itself. It does, however, accomplish what it sets out to do. A few bugbears: 1) The magazine-style biographies of the Chinese elite were distracting and generally unnecessary; 2) Visscher's classification of the 'Ambiguous' and 'Ambitious' SCCCI leadership was a limp and inaccurate attempt at wordplay - under no circumstances could those who advocated gradualism and cooperation be reasonably termed 'Ambiguous'; 3) With regards to the post-WWII Chinese position in Singapore, Visscher would have done well to make a distinction between a citizen's allegiance to Singapore and a merchant's interest in Singapore's future. Taxation and limited representation is not an arbiter of patriotic allegiance. Their insistence on the sanctity of the Chinese language was not the result of wanting to shape Singapore's future as citizens, but a selfish if understandable desire to sustain the culture of their ethnic enclave. It was not until the late 1950s at the earliest that the Chinese began to view Singapore/Malaya as their 'home', but this was not sufficiently fleshed out in the text.

Review # 2 was written on 2017-04-20 00:00:00 Arthur Wittwer Ugh odio los libros así! El protagonista no tenía ni un mínimo de orgullo o amor propio! de jóvenes vivían peleando y de pronto se fueron juntos a Las Vegas y se casaron -jamás se hace referencia a un noviazgo ni siquiera!-, pero al rato se dieron cuenta (bah, ELLA se dio cuenta) de que "no se llevaban bien" y que no iba a funcionar, así que decidieron divorciarse, ella firma los papeles pero él no, así que cuando él vuelve a buscarla 8 años después siguen efectivamente casados. Ahora: 1 - Jamás se enteró nadie de la familia de ninguno de los dos, pero la de él ni siquiera surge en la historia, pero a ella la pintan como muy cercana a sus hermanos (y porqué no les dice nada? "porque fue algo breve que prefería olvidar") 2 - Él no firma los papeles y cuando Alexia le pregunta porqué él no entiende porqué ella no se da cuenta realmente el motivo (que la quiere bla bla bla) 3 - Cuando hablo de amor desproporcionado: él la AMA, ella... siempre lo quiere esconder debajo de la alfombra, su familia no sabe que se casó, está constantemente pidiéndole que le firme el divorcio (que ella ya firmó hace 8 años), le pide a su novio en la boda de su hermano que finja que siguen juntos así lo aleja al protagonista, su hermano va a pedirle al prota que le firme el divorcio --> claramente no hay amor, digan lo que quieran, él la quiere más que ella a él. Constantemente lo humilla y sin embargo él ni se inmuta es IRRITANTE! y recién al final él le firma el divorcio pero ella no se deja vencer delante suyo así que no admite que ya no quiere divorciarse y se va, pero él le propone casamiento de nuevo.... DIGNIDAD HOMBRE, DIG-NI-DAD!
