Review # 1 was written on 2021-08-08 00:00:00 DanMichael Coyne As the title indicates, this autobiography is predominantly two tightly interwoven stories – one about how a bright young man comes to be a renowned scientist in an evolving field of research, and the other about the disruption of World War II and of the paranoia and politics that followed. Much of the scientific material requires an understanding of basic chemistry, at the least, and as the scientific story progressed I was increasingly thankful that I had recently forced myself to struggle through one of my former textbooks, Alfred Lehninger’s Biogenergetics. Even though the reader may not understand the chemistry, however, much can be learned from this book in terms of how academia and science have somehow managed to produce monumental scientific discoveries in the 20th century. As to the security/political story, I was surprised to learn a great many details of the thinking and techniques behind what I’ve always known as McArthyism or the Red Scare. And this surprise was not only historical in nature – the current news provided many similar examples of how certain politicians and media still have an avaricious appetite for creating scary villains.

Review # 2 was written on 2021-01-22 00:00:00 Kathleen Sun It is an amazing record of great science making at the same the personal, political, social and cultural background intervowen in it. Yes, it is a wittness to the exciting time that the USA went through. It is also funny with a special type of humor.
