Writing at the turn of the 19th century, Cohen demonstrates a depth of religious psychology that is almost prescient in its ability to show the depths of the social effects it has. Starting with the premise that all behavior is at core psychological, then extrapolating from the similarity that exists between so-called pscyhotic behavior and so-called religious enthusiasm, Cohen posits that much of the behavior that occurs within religious context is unfairly attributed to such ideology and should be more correctly seen as variations of pscyhosis that in many cases has a sexual component. In other words, religion is not a behavioral set in itself but a means of defining behavior and fails due to other, more rational and scientific means of doing so. Replete with examples and a rigorous analysis, this book should turn the heads of any truly interested in understanding the underlying psychological basis for behavior in religious communities.

Deep exact descriptions Good attempt to explain things of long ago. It is difficult to take bits of history, and fill in the gaps. It, of course, is hoped that the result is accurate. It is also difficult to not fill the gaps with what we hope are facts. This is a good example of that difficulty.
