Scruffy Scroggles goes to school is a fun read for children of all ages. A nice little story about a horrible, hideous, slobbery monster with 6 eyes that, like most monsters, lived under a bed that belonged to a little girl called Lucy. One night Scruffy decides to take a walk and gets lost. He meets a boy called Stephen who does not want to go to school because he was not doing very well. Scruffy says he was hopeless at monster school because he never made spelling mistakes or talked during lessons, which are the things that Stephen does at school. Stephen decides to take Scruffy to school to ask his teacher where Scruffys home is. Scruffys time at school was filled with learning; things like poetry and school dinners and he soon becomes the star pupil. The illustrations are appealing and this book can be a whole class read for children in foundation stage and KS1. Apart from the obvious phonetic title the use of interesting words are fun and quirky-slobbery, hideous, scruffy. The book can be an interesting discussion starter for children in early KS2; about morals or behaviour within the classroom. The story is set in school therefore children are able to relate to the context. Many creative activities can be carried out from this book, for example drawing their own monster, or describing what their monster would look like or even writing their own story from it, about taking a monster to school. All in all this book was an enjoyable read and the illustrations add extra excitement and enjoyment.

My grandma gifted me a copy of this book, the very copy we used to read as children. It's a strange book! I remember it, barely -- that rainbow tummy. I think I must have read the original as well as it looks so familiar. It's not a book I've ever seen at a thrift store though. That simply reminds me of how many books I read as a child that I will probably never encounter again.
