One of the most endearing things about this book is the characterization of the characters: Mom's twitching of her lips, Fawn's tendency for violence, Will's personality, Abe's simplicity, Bud's Elmer-Fudd-look. Even the police officers Will named 'Shoulders' and 'Sunglasses.' I also liked this book more than some others, because Will made a lot less dumb decisions. The second half of the book was less of Will learning obvious things, and more of Will trying to change others' opinions. Plus, the more talk of Rudy there is, the better I'm going to like the book. Rudy is actually a lot like Will; it's hard to believe they're not really related. Considering I read this in one day--after I finished a different book--I would say it's a quick read. But it deals with some pretty weighty issues. (And it doesn't paint FDR in the best light, haha) And it provides not-so-well-known WWII history, which is definitely a bonus.

This story takes place during WWII, and it centers around Will Hutchison. He's a boy that before the war just liked to learn and know what was going on, but now he is confused. There seems to be more things about the war that he is just now learning about. Like the camps that are imprisoning all the Japanese. He knows that his father is being held captive as a prisoner of war. He does not think that the Japanese should be blamed for the entire war. However his opinions do start to sway about blaming the Japanese Americans for all the battles (like Pearl Harbor) in the war. Even though he does not think that the Japanese that live in Santa Fe play a part in the war, he does not want to hate people for no reason. Will sees how different people in his life are affected by the war and what the Axis leaders (like Hitler) are doing. He has several back and forth moments of not knowing quite just what to think. I found this story to be very good and interesting the way the author planned all the events in the book to take place and all the characters that help Will figure out for himself what he thinks about the war and the Japanese for himself.
