It's cover claims 'The biography of an Australian community', which is claiming too much. Daphne Street is a nondescript street in North Perth where Bolton grew up mid-century. I've dreamed of doing the same project, chronicling my street. But even an experienced historian like Bolton has trouble making it come alive. The first half is dominated by the comings and goings of residents, marriages, births, deaths, and occupations - these limited events that have been preserved in the record. The most interesting anecdotes / characters are often those whose connection to the street is tangential or fleeting. Bolton's diagrams of the street privilege ownership, with the owners in capitals and the renters who actually lived in the house in bracketed italics underneath. This seems a misjudgement to me. Anyway, I was interested in the slice of a Perth suburb as an exemplar of the whole, and the changes a century wrought. There are some poignancies and small dramas, and it taught me things about what shaped people's lives. Bolton writes well with dry humour and the years he lived there are brought to life with his memories.

Excellent biography of one of Broadway's most famous and most successful producers. This account is not smeared by any fawning by the author over the subject. He describes Merrick with all of his faults
