Review # 1 was written on 2008-04-14 00:00:00 Lynn Bass THIS is the architecture/style/home book I've been looking for. Not only does it espouse a theory of living that I'm looking to achieve in my own life, but it presents the information about each house in a manner that is engaging and thoughtful. You get more than photos of the house and house plans (which is essential); you also get text and photos that focus on HOW people LIVE in these homes -- essentially, how their day-to-day lives exemplify this idea of casual living. It doesn't hurt that my dream home -- one I found in an issue of Real Simple a couple of years ago (the torn-out pages are still in my desk, never far from hand) -- is featured in this book (the strawbale house on pp.88-95, in case you are curious). |
Review # 2 was written on 2012-12-24 00:00:00 Billy Blair Jr A barefoot home is a home that is informal and open and has a strong indoor/outdoor connection. All good ideas that I can get behind, but the concept never really gelled for me. The idea of a barefoot was never sufficiently differentiated from all of the other ways of describing a good house. Plus, the case studies were largely vacation cottages. These can provide inspiration for a non-vacation home, but there are a lot of things about them that cannot be translated to a full time home. |
